Starting in the middle. Or is this the middle of the start?

I have so much I want to get down 'on paper'; my story, how I got to where I am, what I'm doing now I'm here and what my hopes and plans are for the future. 

Starting a blog feels overwhelming, as if I should have been writing about my adventure in ceramics from the beginning (which I actually did but it was all deleted when I changed from Squarespace 💔). The point at which my journey could be called the 'beginning' will depend on its length in its entirety and I'm hoping to spend my life working with clay. 

Therefore, I'm picking my blogging up from the middle of the beginning. I want to get everyone up to speed and I want to share my day to day experiences. This may make my blog confusing, or hard to follow, but it's my blog and I'll write it how I want to.

As well as teaching at the University for the Creative Arts, I also teach evening classes twice a week at 318 Ceramics in Farnham.  The classes are mixed ability, 'Exploring Clay' class and a throwing class.  A few weeks ago, one of my students in the Exploring Clay class came to me to ask for help with a project she was working on. She was carving house numbers into clay slabs for her family and wanted to fill the carved number area with glass.  The glass was to be recycled from something and the student made several test pieces with her glass and put them into the kiln to see what would come out. The following week, she had her test pieces out of the kiln and they were surprising.. The glass had melted and formed orange blobs. Impressing into clay

Philosophers Hume and Kant believed that we can never experience the world directly, instead we look at the projector within our minds to view the information our eyes have collected. The outside world creates an impression on our senses, which our minds then use as a guide to create our mental experience of the world. The processing of information through our senses creates a barrier to the reality which we can never cross.  However, I believe that through working with clay or any creative medium, we are able to do the opposite, using our senses to literally, metaphorically and metaphysically impress our minds onto reality. If a craftsperson or artist is able to connect with their inner self, it is apparent in their work. It has a sense of authenticity and personality that would otherwise be absent and I believe that through this authentic creative work, we are all able to connect with one another on a much deeper level than words alone could facilitate.
